Thai tycoon Paiboon Damrongchaitham says he has given Liverpool a detailed offer for a major stake in the English Premier League club and expects an answer by the end of September.

If the offer is accepted, the deal should be concluded by the end of this year, he said.

'We have sent our proposal about rights and benefits to Liverpool. We expect to get some answer from them next month on whether there will be another discussion or not,' Paiboon told reporters on Monday.

He declined to give specifics, but said he had set up a holding company, Liverpool Thai Holding Co which he owned himself, to buy the stake.

'The price will be the same the Thai government proposed but the number of shares may be less or more. After the purchase, I will list shares of Liverpool Thai Holding on the Thai stock market.'

The Thai government offered around

NEWCASTLE UNITED

Bobby Robson's five-year reign as Newcastle United manager ended on Monday when he paid the price for his side's poor start to the season and growing dressing room unrest.

Newcastle sacked the 71-year-old former England manager after Saturday's 4-2 defeat at Aston Villa left them 16th in the Premier League standings without a win from four games.

CORTES KEEN ON ANFIELD MOVE

Real Mallorca full-back David Cortes is hoping that he can seal a move to Liverpool ahead of the transfer deadline.

Reds boss Rafael Benitez has been linked with a move for Cortes in recent days and the player is eager to switch to Anfield.

"There is interest but Liverpool have still not got in contact with the club so all I can do is wait and see what happens," he told El Diario de Mallorca.

Cortes' agent Tente Sanchez is not optimistic a deal can be pushed through before Tuesday's deadline.

He said: "If there is still no news, it looks as if it will be complicated for it to happen."

Benitez is in the process of remodelling his squad at Liverpool and has already signed three Spaniards - Josemi, Xabi Alonso and Luis Garcia.

HIGH HOPES FOR HYYPIA RETURN

Liverpool remain hopeful defender Sami Hyypia will have recovered from his broken nose in time for their next game in 11 days' time.

The injury, which forced him off at Bolton on Sunday, may keep him out of Finland's forthcoming World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Armenia.

But time is on Liverpool's side and the influential centre-back should be fit for the league visit of West Brom on 11 September.

Hyypia was replaced early on at the Reebok Stadium by Djimi Traore, whose proposed

ALONSO IN DEFENSIVE WARNING

Xabi Alonso feels Liverpool must tighten up at the back if they are to make progress under Rafa Benitez.

The Spain international made his debut for The Reds in last Sunday's 1-0 reverse at Bolton.

Alonso admits he has not yet fully adjusted to life in England but is confident of proving himself as the season progresses.

However, the former Real Sociedad star concedes Liverpool have a lot of work to do if they are to challenge The Premiership's leading clubs.

"The result (against Bolton) was not good," Alonso stated.

"But I've made my debut, and I know a little more about my team-mates now and, with time, the team can improve the defensive tactics which is what we need to work on most.

"I have signed for a great club where I hope to achieve good things."

MAURO RELISHING ANFIELD CLASH

Deportivo La Coruna midfielder Mauro Silva is looking forward to playing Liverpool at Anfield in the Champions League.

The Spanish outfit will play at Anfield on 19 October, and the 36-year-old Brazilian is excited to be playing in front of the Kop end for the first time.

The former World Cup winner said: "I have never had the chance to play at Anfield during my career and so I am very excited to be able to now.

"A lot of history has been made at that stadium, it's a mythical ground and it makes me very happy to know that I will now have the chance to play there."

Mauro has told manager Javier Irureta that this would be his last season, after joining Depor in 1992 from Bragantino. He recently played in his 350th game for the club.

But Mauro is well aware of the difficulties that Depor face in a group that includes Monaco and Olympiakos as well.

"At this level you know that none of the teams you could face are going to be easy. The hard work really begins now because no one is going to give us an easy ride.

"I think this season's competition has a higher level than in previous years.

"It's more evenly-balanced. We have Spain's four top clubs, Italy's four top clubs and that's important - that all the historic clubs, the strongest teams on the continent are taking part."
