Henry strike not enough to save Arsenal
A cool Thierry Henry finish was not enough to save Arsenal as they crashed out of the Champions League to Bayern Munich on Wednesday. The France forward's 66th-minute strike gave the Gunners a 1-0 second-leg win at Highbury, but the German side moved into the quarters 3-2 on aggregate.
The Premiership champions again floundered when denied space, a fundamental flaw which has cost them in past seasons and surely must raise questions over whether Arsene Wenger has taken the side as far as he can.
But the French coach, his side and the Highbury crowd believed in the miracle when Henry struck with the deftest of finishes 24 minutes from the end.
A frustrated figure in the first half, Henry had almost given his side an opener five minutes before the interval, using his lightning pace to profit from a lucky run of the ball as Robert Kovac challenged Jose Antonio Reyes, only for Oliver Kahn to save from a tight angle.
But when Ashley Cole hoisted a ball upfield and out of Lucio's reach, Henry took a touch before classily stroking the ball into the far corner.
It was a strike of the very highest quality and Henry's cry of 'That's one!' suggested Arsenal could find that crucial second goal.
